What is Internal Medicine?
The medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. All illness related to the internal structures of the human body can be treated by an Internist. They include but not limited to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, headaches, depression, anxiety, asthma, COPD and many others. Some diseases are acute and limited. Others are chronic diseases.
If a problem that is identified is beyond the scope of the internist a specialist is consulted for additional help with treatment. It is always best to start with your internist who can guide you in your care and send you to the right specialist when needed.
Our practice has an additional lifestyle based preventative focus. This means that we emphasize lifestyle as the best way to prevent most chronic diseases. Lifestyle medicine involves nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep hygiene and avoidance of toxic substances.
We encourage preventive services as recommended by experts:
Men : screen for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, colonoscopy, PSA when age appropriate and avoidance of tobacco, drugs, alcohol.
Women : screen for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, colonoscopy, mammogram, bone density according to age, avoidance of toxic substances such as tobacco, drugs, alcohol.
Dr. Abraham is my favorite doctor. She really listens when I tell her things. She explains everything to me in terms that I can understand and in steps that I can take to improve my health.
Dr. Abraham is very thorough and caring, and she spends enough time with you. Her staff is very polite and professional. The best thing I could say is that I would send my family here.
It is extraordinary to have a doctor who puts the ‘whole person’ as a priority in her medical practice. Dr. Abraham always includes natural, lifestyle recommendations with her medical treatments. I always recommend her.
